MongoliAid visit to the Justice Squad bears fruit!
Today the Justice Squad at St Gerard Majella School presented MongoliAid with yet another generous donation of both cash and aluminium cans … not to mention that they are a great bunch of listeners who learned about the Gobi bear and asked some awesome and pertinent questions too!
Saving the Gobi bear – Introducing Odbayar, biologist and researcher
There are less than 30 Gobi bears left! They are the world’s rarest bear, and here at MongoliAid the most loved (though we love all bears too!) On the brink of extinction today, having survived nearly one million years since branching from the archaic brown bear population, they are undoubtedly the bear that needs the most love and now!
Odbayar Tumendemberel is a biologist currently studying the genetic composition of the remnant Gobi bear population as part of the Gobi Bear Research Project. MongoliAid recently met Odbayar and learned that she needs our support to complete her PhD. Without that research, the management of the Gobi bear within its now restricted range within the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area will be based on guesstimates rather than on science.
Her studies will require access to laboratories and expert supervision in Norway and France, and further field work in Mongolia, and will take 2.5 years to complete. Odbayar needs living and research expenses. Unfortunately the Mongolian government seems unable to help fund this critical research.
If you would like to be a part of history by helping Odbayar to complete her work, please contact us at MongoliAid for more details : admin@mongoliaid.org.au.
Thank You!

The can-paign continues!
After a month in Mongolia it was a pleasure to be welcomed back by long-term MongoliAid supporter Cathy and her grand-daughter Bree and their huge collection of crushed aluminium cans – helping us to raise money for the Gobi bear preservation effort! Thanks Cathy and Bree!

Our Save the Gobi Bear campaign kicks off in style!
The Justice Squad at St Gerard Majella School in Cairns is a long-standing friend of MongoliAid, so it comes as no surprise that teacher Maria and her team of young and enthusiastic students are the first school to raise $ for the Gobi bear. The bear needs all the help and friends it can get, and the Justice Squad have signaled their intention to not let the Gobi bear go extinct without a fight! What champion people! The JS donated $500 today!

Ozmosis Cafe and Restaurant in Cairns today became the first business in Australia to begin recycling aluminium cans to raise funds to help MongoliAid help save the Gobi bear. There are perhaps only three dozen Gobi bears left if we are lucky – they are the world’s rarest bear! We hope other businesses in Cairns and Australia will soon join our campaign.

Most folks from FNQ know about or have heard about the Great Wheelbarrow Race held annually between Mareeba and Chillagoe. This year the race took place between 15 and 17 May. The race doubles as a fund-raising event and as a study on the dynamics of team-work, strategy and end-of-the-day beverage imbibement. Team Captain Bec Newlands lead the crew across 140km of barrow-pushing goodness, raising nearly $2000 for MongoliAid in the process. Thank you Bec and your team of champions for your amazing effort!

On 4 May we were fortunate to meet representatives of the MRCS in Ulaan Baatar, then continued to meet members and volunteers out in the field in one of the poor ger districts that skirt the capital. It was a day of sad stories but it was also great to see the many good people doing wonderful things on the ground. We look forward to continuing to work with the MRCS.
