Saving the Gobi bear – Introducing Odbayar, biologist and researcher

October 12th, 2015

There are less than 30 Gobi bears left! They are the world’s rarest bear, and here at MongoliAid the most loved (though we love all bears too!) On the brink of extinction today, having survived nearly one million years since branching from the archaic brown bear population, they are undoubtedly the bear that needs the most love and now!

Odbayar Tumendemberel is a biologist currently studying the genetic composition of the remnant Gobi bear population as part of the Gobi Bear Research Project. MongoliAid recently met Odbayar and learned that she needs our support to complete her PhD. Without that research, the management of the Gobi bear within its now restricted range within the Great Gobi Strictly Protected Area will be based on guesstimates rather than on science.

Her studies will require access to laboratories and expert supervision in Norway and France, and further field work in Mongolia, and will take 2.5 years to complete. Odbayar needs living and research expenses. Unfortunately the Mongolian government seems unable to help fund this critical research.

If you would like to be a part of history by helping Odbayar to complete her work, please contact us at MongoliAid for more details : admin@mongoliaid.org.au.

Thank You!
